Uniquely Human
An entry point for parents and supporters interested in understanding behaviour and listening to experience.
Barry M. Prizant · Tom Fields-Meyer
- Who this is for
- Parents, teachers and friends asking what may be behind a person’s actions.
- Edition notes
- Consulted: a Chinese ebook contents list with 2016 metadata. Other editions are available from the publisher.
- What we have checked
- Ebook bibliographic metadata and contents checked; clinical claims have not been reviewed throughout.
How to begin
Begin with a recent difficult interaction. Separate what you observed, what the person expressed and what remains unknown. Do not substitute an explanation in a book for listening to the individual. A useful next step may simply be a clearer question.
Directions for your reading
- Understanding behaviour: keep “why” an open question.
- Trust, interests and communication: notice what helps interaction.
- Family and self-advocacy: include the person’s own perspective.
Keep these limits in mind
This is a perspective on understanding and support, not proof of causation or a promise that one family approach resolves every difficulty. Health and safety concerns still need individual attention.
Questions to take with you
- Which details did I observe, and which are my interpretations?
- What would the person like to keep or change?
